What does functional lung testing involve?

Lung function tests are a group of tests that measure how well your lungs and airways are working.

Your doctor may order lung function testing if you;

  • Already have a lung condition that requires monitoring
  • Are noticing symptoms related to a respiratory illness
  • Are suspected of having a lung condition
  • Are preparing for surgery
  • Are exposed to certain substances (in the environment or at work) that are linked with lung disease

Lung function tests are non-invasive and safe and are relatively simple to perform. They do, however, require you to breathe in and out with maximum effort which may cause you to feel a little tired and puffed, but not uncomfortable or in pain.

How do I make an appointment for a lung function test?

Appointments require a referral from your GP or other medical practitioner. We will need to receive your referral before we can make the appointment for you. You can bring your referral into the practice, send it via email or fax, or have your doctor send your referral through on your behalf. Once we receive your referral, we will call you to book an appointment time.

Preparing for your Lung Function Test

Your GP will provide the details of your specific testing required, but here are some tips to help

  • Avoid the use of your puffer or inhaler for a specific time leading up to the test. If you don't think it's possible to go without your medication, speak to your doctor, and you will be informed of what to do.
  • Avoid caffeine or strenuous exercise an hour before the test as this may affect your results.
  • Avoid smoking for at least an hour before your test.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing

Your doctor will make an appointment with you after the test to discuss your results.
